The Arrandoon Story
Our Cattle
The breed is ancient, having lived for centuries in the rugged and remote Scottish Highlands where the harsh conditions created a process of natural selection that produced a very fit and adaptable animal of superior intelligence. Raised from calves selected because they exhibited the best traits of this ancient breed, our herd is friendly, easy to handle, amazingly healthy, and low maintenance.
Highlands require little in the way of shelter, feed supplements, or expensive grains to achieve and maintain good condition. Highland cattle seem to enjoy conditions in which manyother breeds would perish. Less than ideal pasture or range is another reason to consider the Highland breed. It has been said that the Highland will eat what other cattle pass by and get fat on it.
The Highland is also an excellent browser, able to clear brush with speed and efficiency.
We have no weather worries, since the cattle are insulated by thick coats of long hair, they prefer to stand out in winter storms. In the spring/summer they shed their long hair as they adapt to warmer weather. They are bright and responsive, with each animal knowing its name and the herd readily coming to a whistle or a hand clap.
Although they have handsome sets of horns, we regularly walk among them without incident.
At Arrandoon Highland Cattle we breed only cattle registered with the Australian Highland Cattle Society.
Highland Beef
The business end of any beef farmer is the quality of the beef it produces. The Highland carcass is ideally suited to meet this challenge. Highland beef is meat that is lean, well marbled and flavorful, with little outside waste. The Highland is insulated by long hair rather than a thick layer of fat. In the British Isles, Highland beef is recognized as choice beef. The British Royal family keeps a large herd of Highlands at Balmoral Castle, near Braemar, Scotland, and considers them their beef animal of choice.
